{"id":798,"date":"2019-09-26T22:08:40","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T22:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.deafhhtech.org\/rerc\/?page_id=798"},"modified":"2019-09-26T22:11:28","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T22:11:28","slug":"about-the-previous-dhh-rerc-2014-2019","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.deafhhtech.org\/rerc\/about-the-previous-dhh-rerc-2014-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"About the previous DHH-RERC (2014-2019)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The mission of the previous Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Improving the Accessibility, Usability, and Performance of Technology for Individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH-RERC) was&nbsp;to provide consumers who are hard of hearing or deaf, and their families and providers, with the knowledge and tools to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Take control<\/strong> of communication and hearing technologies,<\/li><li><strong>Adapt those technologies<\/strong> to real-world environments, and<\/li><li><strong>Achieve greater autonomy and satisfaction<\/strong> in the use of technology\n<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consumers who are deaf or hard of hearing are in the best position to make technology work for them<\/strong><em>\u2013<\/em>no one else can understand their firsthand experiences as well as they do. Consumers can make informed decisions about the types of technologies they select and use and should not have to rely on clinical, hearing health, and other service providers to make those decisions for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Technology is constantly evolving<\/strong><em>. <\/em> Many hearing loss rehabilitation and training activities that used to take place in person in office or clinical settings can now be done online, using technology and provided at an individual\u2019s own pace. The advent of interconnected mobile and wearable devices is also leading to a convergence of hearing devices and consumer electronics that are becoming increasingly integrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Developments&nbsp;in technology translate into greater empowerment and control<\/strong> over how consumers access information, receive training on technology and rehabilitation options, communicate with others, and approach auditory rehabilitation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous DHH-RERC&#8217;s mission was to support consumers to <strong>take control<\/strong> of their communication, <strong>adapt<\/strong> technologies to meet their needs, and <strong>achieve<\/strong> greater autonomy through\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deafhhtech.org\/rerc\/projects#previous\">research, development and knowledge translation activities<\/a> of six projects.\u00a0 The center was led by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tap.gallaudet.edu\/\">Technology Access Program<\/a>\u00a0at Gallaudet University and has been funded since 2014. The current center succeeded the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hearingresearch.org\/\">RERC on Hearing Enhancement<\/a>, which was\u00a0led by Gallaudet University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallaudet.edu\/department-of-hearing-speech-and-language-sciences\">Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences department<\/a>\u00a0from 2003-2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acl.gov\/programs\/research-and-development\/rehabilitation-engineering-research\">Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers<\/a>&nbsp;(RERCs) are funded by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acl.gov\/index.php\/about-acl\/about-national-institute-disability-independent-living-and-rehabilitation-research\">National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research<\/a>, under the Administration for Community Living at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
